Ureides are nitrogenous compounds, primarily allantoin and allantoic acid, that serve as a primary nitrogen source in plants, especially in legumes. They are formed from the catabolism of purines (adenine and guanine) and pyrimidines (cytosine, thymine, and uracil). Ureides are synthesized in root nodules where nitrogen-fixing bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia, which is then transformed into ureides. These ureides are then transported throughout the plant to support growth and development.
