The elevator system, comprised of a sheave (a wheel with a groove) and cables, changes the circular motion of the motor into the lift. The sheave is at the top of the elevator lift shaft and connected to the engine with a drive shaft. The sheave also rotates while the motor turns, thus helping unwind the cables.
