The umbilical cord is a tube-like structure connecting the fetus to the placenta, acting as the lifeline for nutrient and oxygen transfer during pregnancy. It consists of three blood vessels: one vein carrying oxygenated blood from the placenta to the fetus and two arteries carrying deoxygenated blood from the fetus back to the placenta. These vessels are encased in a gelatinous substance called Wharton’s jelly.
