A blood pressure measurement, often taken with a sphygmomanometer, involves a cuff, a pressure gauge, and a method for inflating and deflating the cuff. The cuff is placed around the upper arm and inflated to stop blood flow, then slowly deflated while a stethoscope or sensor monitors the sound of blood flow or detects oscillations in the artery. The pressure at which the first sounds are heard (systolic pressure) and the pressure at which they disappear (diastolic pressure) are recorded.
