Home mechanical ventilation (HMV) is the use of a ventilator, a machine that assists or replaces breathing, in a patient’s home setting. It’s a way to support breathing outside of a hospital, primarily for individuals with chronic respiratory failure or other conditions where breathing is significantly impaired. HMV can be delivered non-invasively through a mask or invasively through a tracheostomy tube.
