A thoracostomy tube, also known as a chest tube, is a flexible, hollow tube inserted through the chest wall into the pleural space (the space between the lungs and chest wall). It’s used to drain air, blood, or other fluids from this space, allowing the lungs to expand properly. The tube is usually made of PVC or silicone and ranges in size from 6 to 40 French.
