Hemolysis testing is a laboratory procedure used to assess the destruction of red blood cells (RBCs) or erythrocytes, either in a sample or in vitro. It can be employed to identify conditions where RBCs are prematurely destroyed, like hemolytic anemia, or to assess the biocompatibility of materials with blood. Hemolysis can also be used to identify the ability of certain bacteria to produce hemolysins, which are enzymes that can damage or lyse red blood cells.
