A sphygmomanometer, or blood pressure cuff, is a device used to measure blood pressure. It typically consists of an inflatable cuff, an inflation mechanism (like a bulb pump or electric pump), and a manometer (pressure gauge). The cuff is wrapped around the upper arm, inflated to stop blood flow, and then slowly released while a stethoscope is used to listen for the sounds of blood returning to the artery. These sounds, registered on the manometer, indicate systolic and diastolic pressure.
